Since the data are at the micro-level, all the variables can be related to each other. As with virtually all family reconstitution data sets for village populations based on local parish records, the one major aspect of demographic behavior for which the village genealogies are particularly ill-suited is migration. Although scattered references to migratory moves are found in them, no systematic investigation of migration is possible. 1. d. , Burger in Hausen vor Wald, Kr. e. Elisabethageb. 1818.
The more fully a particular family can be reconstituted, the greater the information that can be derived. For example, by linking a woman's birth date to her date of marriage, it is possible to know her age at marriage. If the date of her first birth is further linked to her record, not only is the age at which she first gave birth known, but also the interval between marriage and first birth, which among other things indicates whether or not she was pregnant as a bride. If her death date is also linked to her record, the total duration of her marriage can be determined as can her age at death.
Moreover, since the ultimate source of the data for this study is parish records, results relating to the transition can be placed in a longer historical perspective than has generally been possible from studies based only on published vital statistics and census results. The approach followed in this study is almost exclusively demographic. Attempts to link demographic behavior and changing demographic patterns to their social, cultural, and political context are made only sparingly. When explanations are offered, they are usually posited in terms of a relatively self-contained demographic framework.
