Few principals, teachers, or parents understand the value of an excellent school library program. They take what Oberg calls a “cardiac approach”—generally these people are very supportive, and they want and value a good school library, but their heartfelt approach doesn’t mean they understand the complexity of resource-based learning.

An aging teaching population that has barely changed practice over time leads to lack of continuity of program as students move from grade to grade or school to school. Do we ignore or “work around” these individuals? If we move from standard textbook-driven curriculums to exploratory learning that uses textbooks only as a starting point, school libraries will be an essential part of student learning.
